Native to Peru’s virgin rainforests, this medicinal vine is known as the “Amazonian miracle of herbal medicine.” Cat’s Claw has a variety of common names like Uña de Gato. Uncaria tomentosa. The Cat’s claw with small, yellowish-white flowers found in Peru is a large, woody vine that derives its name from hook-like thorns that grow along the vine and resemble the claws of a cat. It can grow to a length of up to 30 m (100 ft), climbing by means of these thorns and is the more commonly form of Cat’s Claw used in traditional medicine.

Cat’s claw has a lengthy history in South America dating back to the Inca civilization. The tribes of the Amazon hold this herb sacred because of its great contribution to medicine. Cat's claw (Uncaria tomentosa) has been used medicinally by various tribes of Peru for at least 2,000 years for conditions such as asthma, inflammations of the urinary tract, arthritis, rheumatism, and bone pain, as a kidney cleanser, for deep wounds, to control inflammation and gastric ulcers and for cancer, tumors, inflammations.

The most studied and researched is a group of oxidole alkaloids that has been documented with immuno-stimulant and antileukemic properties. Another group of chemicals called quinovic acid glycosides have documented anti-inflammatory and antiviral actions.

The plant is rich in Antioxidant chemicals (tannins, catechins and procyanidins) as well as plant sterols (beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, and campesterol) for the plant's anti-inflammatory properties.

A class of compounds known as carboxyl alkyl esters found in cat's claw has been documented with immunostimulant, anti-inflammatory, anticancerous, and cell-repairing properties.
